Regular visits to your dentist are important to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, but a proper home oral hygiene routine is just as crucial for a healthy smile. Daily brushing and flossing, along with a healthy low-sugar diet, keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Daily Brushing and Flossing
The most important thing you can do to maintain good oral health is to brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again before bedtime. Brush in a circular motion while holding your toothbrush at a forty-five-degree angle, making sure to brush along the gum line.
Your toothbrush can also be used on your tongue. Some have a special tongue scraper and these work very well, but brushing the tongue also works to removes additional bacteria from your mouth.
It is also important to replace your toothbrush regularly. We recommend a new one every three months. This ensures it is in good condition and can clean your teeth, gums, and tongue adequately.
Floss daily to remove any food caught between your teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. This helps keep the areas that are prone to cavities clean.
Nutrition for a Healthy Smile
Your diet plays a vital role in maintaining good oral health. Foods and drinks that are high in sugar damage tooth enamel and feed the bacteria that cause decay. Instead, choose fruits, vegetables, and foods high in calcium and vitamin C to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Crisp foods also help keep your teeth free from plaque since the chewing motion triggers saliva production, which neutralizes acids in foods as well as acids produced by oral bacteria.
Consuming juices are good for getting Vitamin C and other nutrients, but the acids in some of these juices can wear down tooth enamel. Be sure to brush shortly after consuming drinks with citrus, or rinse your mouth with water. Other beverages can be harmful to your smile; sodas, alcohol and carbonated drinks are high in phosphorous, which can also damage enamel in large amounts. For good oral health, drink water whenever possible. If you do drink beverages that may damage teeth, using a straw can help reduce the contact your teeth have with these detrimental elements.
