Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Middletown, NJ

Middletown Family Dental provides wisdom teeth removal for both simple and complex cases. Our highly-skilled oral surgeon, Dr. Tommy Pagonis, has many years of experience helping patients with a wide range of wisdom teeth issues.

While many general dentists can perform simple tooth extractions, when it comes to removing impacted wisdom teeth, they often refer their patients to a competent oral surgeon. With our advanced imaging, including our cone beam CT scanner, we can obtain a clear and detailed picture of your tooth roots and plan your procedure accordingly.

The Problem with Wisdom Teeth

While the majority of our teeth emerge without too much discomfort, the last of these, our wisdom teeth, have the least amount of free space and can get “caught” under other existing teeth or tangled in their roots. This is due to the tendency for wisdom teeth to grow in at an angle because of the limited room left for them to emerge properly.

This can happen by the teeth growing at an angle toward the second molar, other adjacent teeth, the back of the mouth, or growing straight and partially emerging but being retained by the jawbone. These impactions can cause the following symptoms:

  • Damage to healthy teeth: If the wisdom tooth pushes against the second molar, it can cause structural damage or increase the risk of an infection. It can also cause crowding of the other teeth and require orthodontic treatment to realign properly.
  • Cysts: The wisdom tooth develops in a sac within the jawbone. This sac can fill with fluid, causing a cyst to form, potentially damaging the jawbone, teeth, and nerves.
  • Decay: Partially impacted wisdom teeth have at higher risk of tooth decay. This occurs because crowded wisdom teeth are harder to clean, allowing food and bacteria to get trapped between the gum and a partially erupted tooth.
  • Gum disease: Because of the difficulty cleaning impacted, partially erupted wisdom teeth, an inflammatory gum condition called Pericoronitis can develop in the area and lead to worsening gum disease.
